Break a long document into several PDFs: one page per file, or page ranges you define. Ideal for pulling out a chapter or separating documents scanned together, without uploading your file.
How it works
- Select the PDF to split.
- Choose “Every page” or enter your ranges, for example 1-3, 4-6, 7-.
- Run the split and download the files (bundled in a ZIP if there are several).
Frequently asked questions
How do I write page ranges?
Separate them with commas: “1-3, 5, 8-”. “8-” means from page 8 to the end, and each range gives you one file.
Can I split a PDF so each file stays under 2 MB or 100 KB?
Yes: choose “By size” mode, enter the maximum size in KB or MB, and PDFRoll groups the pages into files that stay under that limit. A page that is heavier than the limit on its own goes into its own file: in that case, shrink the PDF with “Compress PDF” before splitting it.
How do I get the files created?
If there are several files, they are bundled in a ZIP to unzip. If there’s only one, the PDF downloads directly.
Is the original PDF modified?
No. PDFRoll creates new files and your original document stays intact.
Is page quality preserved?
Yes. Pages are copied as they are, without recompression or conversion to images.
Can I split a PDF on my phone?
Yes, right in the browser. On a phone, “By ranges” mode with a single range saves you from having to open a ZIP.
My PDF is password-protected. What can I do?
First remove the protection with the “Unlock PDF” tool if you know the password, then split the file.
Is it really free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limits. Processing happens on your device, so it costs us nothing.
Two ways to split a PDF
- “Every page”: each page becomes a separate PDF. A 12-page document gives you 12 files.
- “By ranges”: you enter groups of pages in the “Ranges” field, and each range becomes a PDF.
The new files keep the original name followed by the pages they contain, for example “report_pages-1-3.pdf”. If there are several, they are bundled in a ZIP file; if there’s only one, you download the PDF directly.
How to write page ranges
Separate ranges with commas (or semicolons):
- “1-3”: pages 1 to 3 in one file.
- “5”: page 5 on its own.
- “7-”: from page 7 to the end of the document.
- “-4”: from the beginning to page 4.
So “1-3, 4-6, 7-” splits the document into three files. If a range goes beyond the number of pages in the PDF, PDFRoll tells you before creating anything.
Examples of use
- Separate several documents scanned in one go: a statement, an invoice and a contract fed through the scanner together.
- Send one chapter of a book or course without sharing the whole document.
- Break a file that’s too large for an online portal into several smaller parts.
- Send each person only their own form or report card.
Split, extract or delete?
If you want a single new PDF containing a few pages, “Extract pages” is more direct. To remove a few pages and keep the rest, use “Delete pages”. And to reorder or remove pages while seeing their thumbnails, “Organize PDF” is more convenient.
Splitting happens in your browser: your original document is neither modified nor uploaded to a server. Pages are copied without recompression, so each file keeps the quality of the original.
