Frequently asked questions
How do I sign a PDF without printing it?
Open the PDF in “Sign PDF”, create your signature with your mouse, your finger or a photo, place it on the page and download the result. No printing, hand-signing or scanning needed.
How can I create an e-signature for free?
Choose “Draw” to trace your signature, “Type” to write it in a handwriting font, or “Image” to use a photo of your real signature. All three are free and need no account.
What is the best free tool to sign a PDF?
It depends on what you are signing. For everyday documents, look for a tool that is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark. For confidential documents, prefer a tool that does not upload your file, like PDFRoll. For a contract that requires a certified electronic signature, you need a qualified signature service.
Is this signature legally valid?
It is a visual signature, like a scanned one. It is fine for many everyday documents, but not where a certified electronic signature is required.
Can I sign every page?
Yes: choose “All pages” to initial each page in the same spot, or “Last page” to sign only at the end.
Is my signature saved anywhere?
No. It only exists in your browser while you use it: nothing is sent or stored.
Can I sign a PDF on iPhone or Android?
Yes, right in the browser: draw your signature with your finger, place it, then download the signed PDF.
How do I use my real handwritten signature?
Sign on a blank sheet of paper, take a photo of it, then choose “Image”. Check “Remove white background” to keep only the ink.
Can I add the date?
Yes, check the “Signed on” option: today’s date is added below your signature.
How much does it cost to sign a PDF?
Nothing. PDFRoll is free, with no sign-up, no document limit and no watermark.
Three ways to create your signature
- Draw: sign with your mouse, your finger on a touchscreen, or a stylus.
- Type: enter your name and choose from three handwriting styles.
- Upload: use a photo or scan of your signature on paper. PDFRoll can remove the white background for a clean result.
Choose black or blue ink, then drag the signature where you want it and pull its corner to make it bigger or smaller.
Sign one page or the whole document
You can sign only the page you’re viewing, the last page, or every page in the same spot to initial a contract. An option also adds “Signed on” followed by today’s date below the signature.
Sign a PDF on your phone
PDFRoll works in the browser on your iPhone, Android phone or tablet. Open the PDF you received by email, sign with your finger and download the signed document, without installing an app or creating an account.
Is the signature legally valid?
The signature added by PDFRoll is a visual signature, like a scanned handwritten signature. It’s accepted for many everyday documents: purchase orders, quotes, authorizations, school forms or leases, depending on the requirements of whoever receives them.
Some documents, however, require a certified electronic signature tied to an identity certificate, for example certain banking or notarial contracts. When in doubt, ask the recipient which type of signature they accept.
How to choose a free PDF signing tool
Most online eSign tools work the same way on the surface: you add your signature and download the PDF. What differs happens behind the scenes and in the limits of the free version.
- Where your file goes: many online tools upload the document to their servers to process it. PDFRoll signs it directly in your browser.
- Sign-up: some services ask for an account before you can download the signed PDF. PDFRoll does not.
- Limits: some free plans cap the number of documents per day or add a watermark. PDFRoll has neither.
- Type of signature: a visual signature is enough for most everyday documents. A certified electronic signature is only needed when the law or the other party requires it.
