Watermark a PDF online for free

Stamp a text watermark on every page of your PDF.

Protect your documents before sharing them: add “CONFIDENTIAL”, “COPY”, “DRAFT” or your name as a watermark on every page, with the size, color and transparency of your choice.

How it works

  1. Select the PDF.
  2. Type the text and adjust the size, opacity, color and angle.
  3. Click “Add watermark” and download the document.

Frequently asked questions

Can the watermark be removed afterward?

It's added to the page content: it isn't meant to be removed easily, and that's the point. Keep a copy of the original file if you need it without a watermark.

Why add a watermark to a supporting document?

Writing, for example, “Rental application – March” on an ID shows who it was intended for and limits its reuse if it's stolen.

Which characters are accepted?

Latin letters, including accented ones. Emoji and non-Latin alphabets aren't supported yet.

Can I watermark only certain pages?

No, it's applied to all pages. To mark only some of them, first split the document with “Split PDF”, add the watermark, then put it back together with “Merge PDF”.

Can I use an image or a logo as a watermark?

No, the tool only adds a text watermark, for which you choose the size, opacity, color and angle.

My PDF is password-protected. What should I do?

First remove the protection with “Unlock PDF” (you need to know the password), then add the watermark.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It's free, with no sign-up, and it also works in your phone's or tablet's browser.

An adjustable text watermark in seconds

Type your text in the “Text” field: it's written in bold, centered on every page of the document. Four settings let you adapt it to your file:

  • Size: from 12 to 140 points, 60 by default, for a discreet mark or text that spans the whole page.
  • Opacity: from 5 to 100%, 25% by default, so the content stays readable under the watermark.
  • Color: red by default, or any shade with the color picker.
  • Angle: “Diagonal” (45°) or “Horizontal”.

The watermark is applied to all pages in one go, and the file is processed right in your browser, without being sent to a server.

When should you add a watermark?

  • Marking an internal document “CONFIDENTIAL” before sending it to a partner.
  • Stamping “DRAFT” on a working version so it doesn't circulate as the final version.
  • Writing the purpose on a copy of an ID or a pay stub, for example “Rental application – March”, to limit its reuse.
  • Signing a portfolio, a quote or a plan with your name before sharing it.

Getting your watermark settings right

For a document that needs to stay readable, keep the opacity between 15 and 30% and use a light or gray color. A long mark, such as a sentence stating the purpose, works better at a smaller size: text that's too large may run off the edges of the page.

The watermark is added to the page content: it isn't designed to be removed easily. So keep a copy of your original file. Only Latin letters, including accented ones, are supported: emoji and non-Latin alphabets are rejected.

Other tools to go further

To permanently hide a number or an address, use “Redact PDF” rather than a watermark. To prevent the document from being opened or copied, add a password with “Protect PDF”. And to number the pages as well as marking them, follow up with “Page numbers”.
