Frequently asked questions
My PDF has no fields. What can I do?
Use “Edit PDF text” to write anywhere on the page.
What does locking do?
It turns your answers into permanent text: the form can no longer be edited.
Which types of fields can be filled in?
Text boxes, checkboxes, drop-down lists, list boxes and radio buttons.
Can I pick up a form I've already started?
Yes, if you haven't locked it: reopen the file, your previous answers are shown and you can edit them.
How do I sign the form once it's filled in?
Save the form, then open the resulting file in the “Sign PDF” tool to add your signature.
Can I fill in a PDF form on my phone?
Yes, everything works in your phone's or tablet's browser, for free and without creating an account.
Are my files sent to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser: your documents never leave your device.
Every field in a clear list
As soon as you open your PDF, PDFRoll reads its form fields and lists them one below the other, with any answers already entered. Common field types are supported:
- text boxes, single-line or multi-line;
- checkboxes;
- drop-down lists and list boxes;
- radio buttons, where only one answer is possible.
Fields marked “read-only” by the form's author are shown but not changed. Then click “Save form” to download the filled-in PDF. The form is processed in your browser: your answers aren't sent to anyone.
Locking your answers before sending
Check “Lock the answers” if the document is ready to send: your answers become permanent text and the form can no longer be edited. This is useful for a request, an application or a declaration that the recipient shouldn't be able to alter. Leave the option unchecked if you want to finish the form later: when you reopen the file in PDFRoll, your previous answers will be shown and you can correct them. The confirmation message tells you how many fields were saved.
If your form has no fields
Many forms are just printable documents, or scans, with no fields to fill in. PDFRoll tells you as soon as you open the file. In that case, use “Edit PDF text” to write anywhere on the page, then “Sign PDF” if the document needs to be signed.
- The field names shown are the ones given by the form's author: they're sometimes not very descriptive, so use the order of the fields as a guide.
- Emoji and non-Latin alphabets aren't supported in answers.
- If the form is password-protected, first remove the protection with “Unlock PDF”.
