Number a thesis, a report, an application package or attachments in seconds. You choose the position, the format and the first number, and the rest of the document stays exactly as it is.
How it works
- Select the PDF.
- Choose the position, format and first number.
- Click “Number pages” and download the document.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start at 0 or at 3?
Yes, enter the first number you want, for example to leave out the cover page or to continue the numbering of another document.
Which formats are available?
“1”, “1 / 10” and “Page 1 of 10”. The total number of pages is calculated automatically.
Is the rest of the document changed?
No, only the numbers are added to each page.
Where can the numbers go?
Bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center or top right.
Can I skip numbering certain pages?
No, every page of the file is numbered. Remove the pages in question before numbering, then put the document back together with “Merge PDF”.
My PDF is password-protected. What should I do?
First remove the protection with “Unlock PDF” (you need to know the password), then number the pages.
Can I number a PDF on my phone?
Yes, the tool works in your phone's or tablet's browser, for free and without creating an account.
Position, format and first number
Three settings are all you need for clean page numbering:
- Position: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center or top right.
- Format: “1”, “1 / 10” or “Page 1 of 10”, with the total calculated automatically.
- First number: 1 by default, but you can start at 0, at 3 or at any other number.
The numbers are written in small dark gray characters, in the same position on every page. With the “1 / 10” or “Page 1 of 10” format, the total matches the last number printed: if you start an 8-page document at 3, the last page will show “10 / 10”. Processing happens in your browser: your document isn't sent anywhere.
The most common use cases
- Thesis, dissertation or internship report: a number at the bottom center, as most guidelines require.
- Administrative or legal file: the “Page 1 of 10” format shows that no page is missing.
- Combined attachments: number the complete file so you can refer to it easily (“see page 12”).
- A document that follows on from another: start the numbering from the right figure using the first number.
Leaving the cover page unnumbered
Numbering applies to every page of the file. If the cover page must stay unnumbered, first remove it with “Delete pages” (or isolate the body of the document with “Extract pages”), number starting at 2, then put the cover page back at the front with “Merge PDF”.
Also remember to number last: if you add, delete or reorder pages afterward with “Organize PDF”, the numbers already printed don't update. Likewise, combine your different files with “Merge PDF” before numbering, to get a continuous sequence from start to finish.
