Frequently asked questions
What are these properties for?
The title appears in PDF readers and search results. The author can reveal a name you'd rather not share.
Does the PDF content change?
No, only the file's internal information is edited. The pages stay the same.
How do I erase the author's name?
Clear the “Author” field, then click “Save”: the information is removed from the file.
Does the file name change?
No, the downloaded file keeps the same name. The internal title and the file name are two different things.
Can I edit the keywords or the creation date?
No, the tool edits the title, author and subject. The modification date is updated automatically when you save.
My PDF is password-protected. What should I do?
First remove the protection with “Unlock PDF” (you need to know the password), then edit its properties.
Is my file uploaded online?
No, the editing happens in your browser, for free and with no sign-up, on a computer or a phone.
Which properties can you edit?
Besides its pages, a PDF contains a few pieces of descriptive information you don't see when reading the document. They appear in your PDF reader's “Properties” window and can be read by anyone who receives the file. This tool lets you edit three of them:
- Title: shown by many PDF readers and browsers instead of the file name.
- Author: often filled in automatically with the account name of the computer that created the document.
- Subject: a short description of the content.
The current values are prefilled: edit the ones you care about, or clear a field to erase that information. The modification date is updated and PDFRoll is listed as the file's producer.
Why change a PDF's properties?
- Removing your name or a colleague's before sending a document outside your organization.
- Replacing a title inherited from an old template, such as “Document1” or “Untitled presentation”.
- Giving a clear title to a PDF published on a website: it's often what appears in the browser tab and in search results.
- Tidying up documents you archive or share.
- Adding a descriptive subject to a report or a procedure so it's easier to find.
What the tool doesn't change
The page content stays exactly the same and the file keeps the same name. The internal title isn't the file name: to rename the file, simply do it in your file explorer. Other internal information, such as keywords or the creation date, can't be edited with this tool.
To fix a word or a date visible in the document, use “Edit PDF text”. To hide sensitive information written on the pages, “Redact PDF” is the right tool. The editing happens entirely in your browser: your file isn't sent to any server.
