Compress a photo to 50 KB for ICAI

ICAI accepts a photograph and a signature of no more than 50 KB each, in JPEG, for its examination forms. A photo taken with a phone weighs 3 to 5 MB, so you need to divide its weight by about a hundred.

What ICAI actually asks for

PhotographSignature
Maximum size50 KB50 KB
FormatJPEGJPEG
Suggested filenamephoto.jpegsign.jpeg

The photograph must be a recent colour passport-style picture on a light or white background. The signature must be signed on white paper, scanned at 200 dpi, and cropped to the signature itself rather than left on the whole sheet.

The 50 KB applies to each file separately, so the photograph and the signature each get their own 50 KB.

Getting a phone photo to 50 KB

  1. Crop the picture first, to the head and shoulders for the photograph, or to the signature itself for the signature. Removing background is the single biggest saving, and it costs no quality at all.
  2. Open Compress image and drop the file in.
  3. Choose “Maximum size” and enter 50 KB.
  4. Download the result, and open it before uploading: your face, or the signature, has to stay clearly recognisable.

The compression runs in your browser. Your photograph is never sent to a server, which is worth knowing given how many “resize for exam” sites exist and how little any of them say about what they keep.

If the result looks bad

  • Crop harder. A tight passport-style crop at 50 KB looks far better than a full-body photo squeezed to the same weight.
  • Photograph against a plain wall. A busy background costs a surprising number of kilobytes and adds nothing.
  • For the signature, sign with a black pen on white paper and scan in greyscale: it compresses better than a colour photo of the same sheet.
  • Avoid photographing a printed photograph. Re-photographing adds noise, and noise is what makes a file heavy.

FAQ

What is the exact size limit for the ICAI photo?

50 KB per file, for the photograph and for the signature separately, in JPEG format. The figure comes from ICAI's own image specification page, linked above with the date it was last checked.

Does ICAI require specific pixel dimensions?

The specification page states the size, the format and the 200 dpi scan for the signature, but does not give pixel dimensions. Keep a normal passport proportion and let the file size be the constraint.

Can I upload a PNG instead?

No. ICAI asks for JPEG. Compress image returns a JPEG, so a PNG becomes a valid file once compressed.

Why does my photo still look blurry at 50 KB?

Because the image is larger than it needs to be. Crop to the head and shoulders before compressing: the same 50 KB then covers a quarter of the area, so each part of the picture gets four times the detail.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression happens inside your browser and the file never leaves your device, which you can verify in your browser's network tab.
